Which airline was the launch customer for the Airbus A321, entering commercial service in 1994?

The story behind the answer

Lufthansa was the launch customer for the Airbus A321, entering commercial service in 1994.

The A321 is the longest member of Airbus’s original A320 family. It was developed by stretching the A320 fuselage, allowing it to carry more passengers while retaining the family’s common flight deck and fly-by-wire design. Lufthansa received the first A321 and introduced it on scheduled passenger routes.

The A321 is sometimes confused with the A320 because both aircraft share the same basic cockpit and narrow-body layout. The key visible distinction is the A321’s longer fuselage and additional emergency exits. Airbus later developed the A321neo and A321XLR, which extended the aircraft’s range and made it a major competitor to larger narrow-body and smaller wide-body jets.

Lufthansa’s early operation helped demonstrate that a stretched A320 could serve both dense short-haul routes and longer European sectors efficiently.
