Which airline was the first to operate the Boeing 737-600 in commercial service?

The story behind the answer

SAS was the first airline to operate the Boeing 737-600 in commercial service.

The 737-600 is the shortest member of Boeing’s 737 Next Generation family. SAS introduced the type in 1998, using it on routes where a smaller aircraft was better suited to demand while retaining the newer family’s range and cockpit technology.

The aircraft shares its basic design and systems with the larger 737-700, 737-800 and 737-900. Its compact size made it useful for shorter or lower-demand routes, although it sold in much smaller numbers than the longer variants.

SAS refers to Scandinavian Airlines, the carrier jointly associated with Denmark, Norway and Sweden. It should not be confused with South African Airways, which uses the same three-letter initials in English-language references but is a separate airline.
