Emirates was founded in Dubai in 1985 and became the United Arab Emirates’ flag carrier.
The airline began operations on October 25, 1985, with flights from Dubai to Karachi and Mumbai. It was established with support from Dubai’s government after Gulf Air reduced some regional services. Emirates initially operated with a small fleet, including aircraft leased from Pakistan International Airlines.
Dubai’s location between Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia helped the airline develop a large connecting hub. Dubai International Airport became the center of its network, allowing passengers to travel between many cities without a direct local market at either end.
Etihad Airways is also based in the United Arab Emirates, but it was founded later, in 2003, and is based in Abu Dhabi. Gulf Air is a separate regional airline associated with Bahrain. Emirates is known for its large wide-body fleet, particularly Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft.
