Which airline resulted from the 2013 merger of US Airways and American Airlines?

The story behind the answer

The 2013 merger of US Airways and American Airlines resulted in the combined American Airlines Group and the continued American Airlines brand.

American Airlines had entered bankruptcy protection in 2011, while US Airways sought a larger network and stronger competitive position. Their agreement created the world’s largest airline at the time by several widely used measures, including fleet size and passenger traffic. The merger closed in December 2013.

The parent company was named American Airlines Group, and US Airways aircraft, employees, and operations were gradually integrated into American Airlines. The US Airways brand disappeared from regular operations in 2015, although the two airlines operated as a combined corporate group before full integration.

United Airlines is a separate carrier created through the 2010 merger of United Airlines and Continental Airlines. American’s earlier merger with America West in 2005 also makes the company’s history easy to confuse with the 2013 US Airways transaction.
