Iberia operated the first commercial Airbus A321XLR flight in October 2024.
The Spanish flag carrier began passenger service with the long-range A321XLR on 30 October 2024, flying from Madrid to Paris. The aircraft is a single-aisle member of the A320 family, but its additional fuel capacity and structural changes give it substantially greater range than earlier A321 variants.
Airbus designed the A321XLR to serve routes that may not generate enough demand for a larger wide-body aircraft. Its range allows airlines to connect some long-haul city pairs with a narrow-body jet, potentially reducing operating costs and increasing scheduling flexibility. Iberia’s launch operation therefore marked an important step in Airbus’s long-range single-aisle strategy.
The A321XLR should not be confused with the A321LR, which entered service earlier and has a shorter certified range. Iberia was the launch operator for the XLR version, while other airlines had already used earlier long-range A321 models.
