Which airline operated the first Airbus A320neo passenger service in 2016?

The story behind the answer

Lufthansa operated the first Airbus A320neo passenger service in 2016.

The German carrier received the first production A320neo and introduced it on scheduled flights in January 2016. The aircraft was the first member of Airbus’s re-engined A320neo family, which promised lower fuel consumption and reduced noise compared with earlier A320 models.

Lufthansa’s first A320neo service connected Frankfurt and Hamburg. The aircraft used Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan engines, one of two engine options offered for the A320neo. Airbus later delivered A321neo and A319neo variants, extending the family’s range of sizes.

The A320neo should not be confused with the original A320, whose first operator was Air France in 1988. IndiGo and other large A320-family customers placed major orders, but Lufthansa was the launch operator of the neo variant.
