Which airline launched the AAdvantage frequent-flyer program in 1981?

The story behind the answer

American Airlines launched the AAdvantage frequent-flyer program in 1981.

The program was created as airlines sought new ways to reward repeat customers after the United States deregulated the airline industry in 1978. AAdvantage allowed eligible travelers to earn mileage credits based on their flights and later redeem them for awards such as free or discounted travel.

AAdvantage is widely regarded as the first major modern airline frequent-flyer program. American’s initiative quickly influenced competitors, including United Airlines, which introduced Mileage Plus in 1981. The term “frequent-flyer program” is sometimes confused with earlier customer incentives, but AAdvantage helped establish the standardized mileage-based model used today.

The program has since expanded beyond flights. Members can earn miles through partner airlines, hotels, car rentals, credit cards, and other businesses. Its name combines “advantage” with the airline’s identity and is written with a capital A in the middle.
