Cargolux became the first operator of the Boeing 747-8 Freighter in 2011.
The Luxembourg-based cargo airline received the first 747-8F on 13 October 2011. Boeing developed the freighter version alongside the passenger 747-8 Intercontinental, using the new aircraft's longer fuselage, updated engines, and improved wing design.
Cargolux was closely associated with the type before delivery and had placed orders for multiple aircraft. Its global freighter network made it a natural launch operator for Boeing's newest 747 cargo variant.
The first 747-8F is distinct from the first passenger 747-8. Lufthansa operated the first 747-8 Intercontinental passenger service in 2012. The freighter was introduced earlier because cargo operators could take advantage of its payload, range, and compatibility with established 747 airport infrastructure.
