Which airline became the first commercial operator of the Airbus A220 in 2016?

The story behind the answer

SWISS became the first commercial operator of the Airbus A220 in 2016.

The aircraft entered service with SWISS on July 15, 2016, when the airline was still operating it as the Bombardier CSeries CS100. The type was later renamed the Airbus A220-100 after Airbus acquired a majority stake in the CSeries program in 2018.

The A220 was developed for the small single-aisle market, with a composite-material wing, advanced engines, and a cabin intended to improve passenger comfort. Its two-abreast seating arrangement on each side creates a five-seat row, unlike the six-abreast layout common on larger narrow-body jets.

Air Baltic became an important early operator, while Delta Air Lines became a major A220 customer in the United States. Those later operators are sometimes named in answers because they helped popularize the aircraft, but SWISS operated the first commercial A220 service.
