Oneworld was the airline alliance launched in 1999 by American Airlines, British Airways, Canadian Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Qantas.
The alliance officially began operations on 1 February 1999. Its founding members connected major networks in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada, allowing passengers to combine services and earn benefits across participating airlines.
Oneworld later expanded through additional members and became one of the three major global airline alliances. Its frequent-flyer benefits include reciprocal status recognition and access to selected lounges, though exact privileges depend on fare and membership level.
A common mix-up is the founding date of Star Alliance, which began in 1997. SkyTeam followed in 2000. Oneworld’s name refers to its intended worldwide network rather than to a single airline or reservation system.
