Which African wind farm, opened in 2018, is Kenya’s largest wind-power project?

The story behind the answer

Lake Turkana Wind Power is Kenya’s largest wind-power project and opened commercially in 2018.

The wind farm is located near Lake Turkana in northern Kenya, an area known for strong and persistent winds. Its 365 turbines have a combined capacity of 310 megawatts. Electricity travels through a long transmission connection to Kenya’s national grid, making the project a major infrastructure undertaking as well as a renewable-energy development.

Construction began after years of planning, financing, and transmission work. The project was designed to increase Kenya’s electricity supply while reducing dependence on fossil-fuel generation and rainfall-sensitive hydropower. Its location also made roads, logistics, and grid connection especially challenging.

Lake Turkana Wind Power is sometimes confused with Kenya’s smaller Ngong Hills Wind Farm, the country’s earlier wind project. The two sites are distinct: Lake Turkana is much larger and is one of Africa’s most significant wind-energy installations.
