Liberia's national flag is nicknamed the Lone Star and was adopted on 24 August 1847.
The nickname comes from the single white star displayed on a blue canton in the flag's upper hoist corner. Liberia's flag also features eleven alternating red and white horizontal stripes, creating a deliberate visual connection with the United States.
The flag was adopted about a month after Liberia declared independence on 26 July 1847. Its design reflects the country's close historical relationship with the United States, whose free Black settlers and formerly enslaved people helped establish Liberia through the American Colonization Society and related efforts.
The Lone Star should not be confused with Ghana's Black Star, which is a different symbol, or with Somalia's single white star on a blue field. Liberia's star is white and appears inside a blue square alongside the red-and-white stripes. Liberia also became the first modern republic in Africa, a historical fact often associated with the symbolism of its star.
