Morocco’s flag is red with a green five-pointed star, traditionally called the Seal of Solomon, at its center. The star is a linear pentagram formed by two interlaced triangles and is the flag’s defining emblem.
Red has deep historical associations with Morocco’s ruling Alawi dynasty and with the sharifs of Mecca. The green star is commonly connected with the five pillars of Islam. The current design was introduced by Sultan Mawlay Yusef on 17 November 1915, when the star was added to distinguish Morocco’s red flag from similar maritime flags.
During the period of French and Spanish control, the flag continued to be used inland, while its use at sea was restricted. After Morocco regained independence in 1956, it also became the country’s maritime flag.
The emblem is sometimes called a pentagram, but in this context it is not meant as a generic decorative star. Its five continuous branches and green color are specified in Morocco’s constitutional description. Libya, Algeria, and Tunisia have different symbols and color arrangements.
