Comoros has a flag with four horizontal stripes and a green hoist-side triangle containing a crescent and four stars.
The modern flag was designed by Suzanne Gauthier and officially adopted on 23 December 2001. From top to bottom, its horizontal stripes are yellow, white, red, and blue. The green chevron or triangle sits at the hoist, the side nearest the flagpole, and carries a white crescent with four five-pointed stars.
The four stripes represent the four principal islands associated with the Comoros: Mohéli, Mayotte, Anjouan, and Grande Comore. Mayotte remains claimed by Comoros but is administered as a French department, which makes the symbolism politically significant. The four stars reinforce the same four-island idea.
The crescent, stars, and green colour reflect Islam, the dominant religion of the Comorian population. A frequent mistake is confusing the design with flags of other Muslim-majority countries, or overlooking that the stripes and stars both encode the number four. Comoros has changed its flag several times since independence in 1975, but the crescent and four-star motif has remained a recurring feature.
