Cameroon's national flag has a yellow five-pointed star on its central red vertical stripe.
The flag is a vertical tricolour of green, red, and yellow, with the star centred in the red band. Cameroon adopted the present design on 20 May 1975, after the country became a unitary state. The star is commonly called the “star of unity,” while the red central stripe is associated with national unity.
The colours are part of the Pan-African colour tradition. Green is linked with the forests and southern region of Cameroon, yellow with the northern savannas and the sun, and red with unity. These interpretations are widely cited, though flag symbolism can vary between official and popular explanations.
The most common confusion is with Guinea, Mali, and Senegal, which also use green, yellow, and red. Their stripe arrangements differ: Guinea reverses Cameroon's colour order, Mali places green beside yellow and red, and Senegal has a green star on its yellow centre stripe. Cameroon is distinguished by the single yellow star placed on red.
