Which African country was formerly called Upper Volta?

The story behind the answer

The African country formerly called Upper Volta is Burkina Faso.

The country adopted the name Burkina Faso on 4 August 1984, during the revolutionary government led by Thomas Sankara. The name combines words from the country's Mossi and Dyula languages and is commonly translated as “Land of Incorruptible People.” Before that change, the independent state was known as the Republic of Upper Volta.

Upper Volta had gained independence from France in 1960. The earlier name referred to the upper basin of the Volta River system, whose major branches include the Black Volta, White Volta and Red Volta. Burkina Faso is landlocked in West Africa and borders six countries, including Mali, Niger, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire.
