Ghana has Accra as its capital and Kumasi as a major inland city.
Accra lies on Ghana’s Gulf of Guinea coast and became the national capital after Ghana achieved independence in 1957. Kumasi, located inland in the Ashanti Region, is one of Ghana’s largest urban centres and the historic seat of the Asante kingdom.
The Asante state grew powerful through gold trading, military organisation, and control of important routes across West Africa. Kumasi remains closely associated with Asante culture and the Asantehene, the traditional ruler of the Asante people.
Ghana was formerly known as the Gold Coast under British colonial rule, but this question concerns the modern country and its cities. Accra is the administrative and political centre, while Kumasi is an important commercial, educational, and cultural hub. Cape Coast, another historic Ghanaian city, served as an earlier colonial capital.
