Which African country was formerly called Abyssinia?

The story behind the answer

Ethiopia was formerly called Abyssinia.

Abyssinia was a historical name used primarily for the Ethiopian Highlands and the Ethiopian Empire. The name Ethiopia is much older in written usage, appearing in Greek sources and eventually becoming the country’s standard international name. Ethiopia’s long history includes the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, one of the major powers of late antiquity.

Ethiopia is unusual in Africa because it largely avoided long-term European colonial rule, although Italy occupied it from 1936 to 1941. Addis Ababa became the capital in the late nineteenth century. Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia after the Second World War and later became independent in 1993, but it was not the country historically known as Abyssinia.
