Which African country uses the birr as its national currency?
Answer
Ethiopia
Answer
Ethiopia
Ethiopia uses the birr as its national currency.
The Ethiopian birr is the official currency of Ethiopia and is issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia. The modern birr was introduced in 1894 during the reign of Emperor Menelik II, although Ethiopia’s monetary history includes earlier forms of currency and periods of foreign occupation.
The word “birr” means “silver” in Amharic and other Ethiopian languages. The currency is divided into 100 santim. Ethiopian banknotes and coins feature national symbols, historical figures, and images connected with the country’s cultural and natural heritage.
The birr is sometimes confused with currencies in neighbouring countries because Ethiopia shares borders with Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, and Somalia. Eritrea uses the nakfa, Sudan uses the Sudanese pound, and Somalia uses the Somali shilling. Ethiopia’s currency code is ETB.
