Which African country is the only one whose national flag features a firearm?

The story behind the answer

Mozambique is the African country whose national flag features a firearm, specifically an AK-47.

Mozambique’s flag has horizontal green, black and yellow bands separated by narrow white stripes. A red triangle at the hoist contains a yellow star, a book, a hoe and an AK-47 rifle with a bayonet. The symbols represent Marxism, education, agriculture and national defence in the historical context of the flag’s adoption.

The present flag was adopted in 1983, after Mozambique became independent from Portugal in 1975. Its design grew from the flag of the Mozambique Liberation Front, or FRELIMO, which led the independence struggle.

Mozambique’s flag is often discussed as the only national flag displaying a modern firearm. Several other flags contain weapons or weapon-related imagery, but they do not show a firearm in the same way. Mozambique’s capital is Maputo, on the country’s southern coast.
