Which African country is nicknamed the “Rainbow Nation”?

The story behind the answer

The African country nicknamed the “Rainbow Nation” is South Africa.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu popularised the phrase after South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy. It describes the country's diverse population and the ideal of people from different racial, cultural and linguistic backgrounds living together. Nelson Mandela also used the image prominently after becoming president in 1994.

South Africa has 12 official languages, including isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans and English. It has three capital cities: Pretoria is the administrative capital, Cape Town is the legislative capital and Bloemfontein is the judicial capital. The nickname refers to national diversity and reconciliation, not to the country's weather or flag.
