Which African country is home to the walled city of Harar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

The story behind the answer

Ethiopia is home to Harar, the historic walled city designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Harar lies in eastern Ethiopia and is renowned for its distinctive Islamic architecture and cultural traditions.

The historic city is enclosed by defensive walls known as the jugol. Inside them are narrow streets, traditional houses, mosques, shrines, and markets reflecting Harar’s long role as a center of trade and Islamic scholarship. UNESCO inscribed the fortified historic town in 2006.

Harar is sometimes confused with cities in neighboring Somalia because of its location in the Horn of Africa and its strong Muslim heritage. It is nevertheless an Ethiopian city, and the Harari people and language are closely associated with its distinctive cultural identity. The city is also famous for a longstanding evening tradition in which hyenas are fed outside its walls.
