Which African country is home to Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town?

The story behind the answer

South Africa is the African country containing Table Mountain, the landmark overlooking Cape Town.

Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain at the northern end of the Cape Peninsula. Its summit rises about 1,085 metres above sea level and is part of Table Mountain National Park.

The mountain’s distinctive sandstone layers and plateau shape make it one of Africa’s best-known natural landmarks. Cape Town stands between Table Bay and the mountain, with the summit forming a dramatic backdrop to the city.

Table Mountain should not be confused with the similarly named Table Mountain in other countries. South Africa is also unusual for having three official capital cities: Pretoria, Cape Town, and Bloemfontein.
