Cape Verde is the African country home to Pico do Fogo, the highest point in the Cape Verde islands.
Pico do Fogo is an active stratovolcano on Fogo Island. Its summit reaches 2,829 metres above sea level, making it the highest elevation in the island country. The volcano rises within the broad caldera of an older volcanic structure, and its dark slopes contrast with the settlements and cultivated land around the mountain.
Fogo is one of the islands formed by volcanic activity in the Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago lies west of Senegal and consists of ten main islands, although one is uninhabited. Cape Verde’s landscapes vary greatly: some islands are rugged and volcanic, while others have broad beaches or drier plains.
Pico do Fogo should not be confused with Mount Cameroon or Pico da Antónia, which are high points in other African countries. Cape Verde’s capital is Praia, on Santiago Island.
