Tanzania is the African country home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the continent’s highest mountain.
Kilimanjaro rises in northeastern Tanzania near the border with Kenya. Its highest point, Uhuru Peak on Kibo cone, reaches 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. Although the mountain is close to Kenya and is often pictured from the Kenyan side, its summit and principal slopes are in Tanzania.
Kilimanjaro is a stratovolcano made up of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. Kibo is the tallest and is dormant, while Mawenzi and Shira are extinct. The mountain is protected within Kilimanjaro National Park, which was established in 1973. A common mix-up is to identify Kenya as the country containing Kilimanjaro because the mountain is strongly associated with views from Amboseli National Park.
