Lesotho is the African country completely surrounded by South Africa and has Maseru as its capital.
Lesotho is a small, mountainous kingdom in southern Africa. It was formerly known as Basutoland and became independent from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966. The country’s territory is entirely enclosed by South Africa, making it one of the world’s few enclaved countries and the only independent country surrounded by another country at all of its borders.
Maseru lies on the Caledon River along the western border and is Lesotho’s largest city. Lesotho is often called the “Kingdom in the Sky” because much of its land lies at high elevation. Its highest point is Thabana Ntlenyana, at 3,482 metres.
Eswatini is also a southern African monarchy, but it borders South Africa and Mozambique rather than being fully enclosed. Lesotho’s national identity is closely linked to the Basotho people and the Sesotho language.
