Which African country has won the Africa Cup of Nations more times than any other?

The story behind the answer

Egypt has won the Africa Cup of Nations more times than any other African country.

Egypt’s men’s national team has won the continental championship seven times. Its titles came in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010. The first two victories came in the competition’s early years, while the three consecutive titles from 2006 through 2010 established one of the tournament’s strongest periods of dominance.

Egypt’s team is commonly nicknamed the Pharaohs, reflecting the country’s ancient history. The Africa Cup of Nations is organised by the Confederation of African Football, or CAF. Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria are also among the competition’s most successful teams, but none has matched Egypt’s seven championships. Egypt’s record concerns tournament titles, not necessarily the number of final appearances.
