Which African country has the capital Addis Ababa, one of the world’s highest national capitals?

The story behind the answer

Ethiopia has Addis Ababa as its capital, a city standing at roughly 2,355 metres above sea level.

Addis Ababa lies in the central Ethiopian highlands at the foot of the Entoto Mountains. Its elevation gives it a cooler climate than many other capitals near the equator. The city was founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II and Empress Taytu Betul, and it became the permanent imperial capital soon afterward.

Addis Ababa is Ethiopia’s political and economic centre and hosts the headquarters of the African Union. It also hosts the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, making it a major diplomatic hub for the continent.

The city’s elevation is sometimes described with slightly different figures because its districts cover varied terrain. It is among the highest national capitals worldwide, but it is not the world’s highest; that distinction is generally associated with La Paz, Bolivia, whose administrative status is described differently from constitutional capitals.
