Tanzania is the African country whose capital is Dodoma.

Dodoma lies near the center of Tanzania and became the country’s designated capital after the government announced the relocation from Dar es Salaam in 1974. The move was intended to encourage development inland and place the national capital in a more central position. Dodoma became the official capital in 1996.

Dar es Salaam remains Tanzania’s largest city, principal port, and major commercial center, which explains why it is sometimes mistakenly given as the capital. Dodoma, however, is the political and administrative capital, and Tanzania’s Parliament is located there. Government offices have progressively moved to the city, while Dar es Salaam continues to play an important economic role.

Tanzania was formed in 1964 through the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Its name combines parts of those two territories. The country is in East Africa and includes the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia, as well as mainland territory bordering Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique.
