Which African country has the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country code STP?

The story behind the answer

The ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code STP belongs to São Tomé and Príncipe.

ISO 3166-1 assigns standardized country codes used by databases, governments, shipping systems and international organizations. Its alpha-3 format uses three letters, so STP is the three-letter identifier for this island nation in the Gulf of Guinea. The country’s two-letter alpha-2 code is ST, and its numeric code is 678.

São Tomé and Príncipe consists mainly of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe, located off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. Portuguese explorers reached the previously uninhabited islands in the late 15th century, and Portugal later colonized them. The country became independent on 12 July 1975.

The code can be easy to confuse with unrelated abbreviations. STP is also used for St Pancras railway station and has appeared as a company or technical acronym, but in an ISO country-code question it uniquely identifies São Tomé and Príncipe. Comoros, Cabo Verde and Seychelles use different alpha-3 codes.
