Which African country has a national flag featuring an AK-47 rifle?
Answer
Mozambique
Answer
Mozambique
Mozambique is the African country whose national flag features an AK-47 rifle.
The rifle appears on the yellow triangle of Mozambique’s flag, alongside a hoe and an open book. Together, these symbols represent defense, agriculture, and education. The star represents Marxism and internationalism, while the red stripe recalls the struggle for independence.
Mozambique adopted the flag on 1 May 1983, after gaining independence from Portugal in 1975. Its design developed from the flag of the Mozambique Liberation Front, or FRELIMO, which led the independence movement.
The AK-47 is often described as the only modern firearm on a national flag. In 2005, Mozambique debated changing its flag, but the proposal was not adopted. The country’s flag is therefore especially recognizable among national flags because it combines political symbols with a clearly depicted weapon.
