Which African country contains Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest national park?
Answer
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Answer
Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo contains Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest national park.
Virunga was established in 1925 as Albert National Park by the Belgian colonial administration. It lies in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo along the borders with Uganda and Rwanda. The park protects an extraordinary range of habitats, including forests, savannas, wetlands, glaciers, and active volcanic landscapes.
Virunga is famous for mountain gorillas, although the park also supports chimpanzees, okapis, elephants, hippos, and many bird species. Its border location can cause confusion with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which protect related mountain-gorilla habitat on the same volcanic massif.
