Ethiopia is the African country that contains the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Aksum.
Aksum, also spelled Axum, lies in northern Ethiopia and was the center of the ancient Kingdom of Aksum. The site is known for monumental granite stelae, royal tombs, and archaeological remains dating from the first millennium BCE through the first millennium CE.
The Kingdom of Aksum was an important Red Sea power and adopted Christianity in the fourth century under King Ezana. Aksum is sometimes confused with Eritrea because the ancient kingdom’s influence extended across the Red Sea region and nearby parts of modern Eritrea. Modern Aksum is also important in Ethiopian Orthodox Christian tradition.
