Which African country contains the famous Djemaa el Fna square?

The story behind the answer

Morocco contains Djemaa el Fna, the famous public square in Marrakesh.

Djemaa el Fna is the historic central square of Marrakesh, a city founded in 1070–1072 by the Almoravid dynasty. The square has long functioned as a meeting place, market, and performance space. Storytellers, musicians, performers, food sellers, and other entertainers have made it one of Morocco’s best-known public cultural spaces.

The square is part of the medina of Marrakesh, which UNESCO inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1985. UNESCO also recognised the cultural space of Djemaa el Fna through its programme for intangible heritage, highlighting the oral traditions and performances associated with it.

Visitors sometimes spell the name “Jemaa el-Fnaa” or “Djemaa el-Fna.” Both forms refer to the same Moroccan square. It should not be confused with Marrakesh’s Koutoubia Mosque, a nearby landmark but a separate site.
