Which aerospace company did Northrop acquire in 1994, creating Northrop Grumman?

The story behind the answer

Northrop acquired Grumman in 1994, creating Northrop Grumman.

Northrop and Grumman agreed to merge in 1994, and the transaction was completed in July of that year. The combination brought together two major American aerospace and defense contractors with histories reaching back to the early twentieth century.

Grumman was known for aircraft such as the F-14 Tomcat and for building the lunar module used by NASA’s Apollo missions. Northrop had deep expertise in military aircraft, including flying-wing designs. Their merger created a broader company serving aircraft, spacecraft, electronics, and defense customers.

The resulting company was named Northrop Grumman Corporation. It is often confused with later defense-industry mergers, including Northrop’s 1997 acquisition of Logicon and its 1998 merger with Westinghouse’s electronic-systems business. The 1994 Grumman transaction is the one that established the Northrop Grumman name.
