Which aerobatic team traditionally performs a flyover at Ottawa’s Canada Day ceremonies? The Snowbirds traditionally perform it.
The Canadian Forces Snowbirds are Canada’s official military aerobatic demonstration team. Flying Canadair CT-114 Tutor jets, the team performs precise formations, crossing manoeuvres and coordinated aerial displays at public events across the country, including Canada Day celebrations in the national capital when the schedule and conditions permit.
The Snowbirds were formed in 1971 and are based at 15 Wing Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan. Their aircraft are older trainers rather than supersonic fighters, which helps the team perform tightly choreographed displays at relatively low speeds and altitudes suited to spectators.
The alternatives are famous demonstration teams from other countries: the Thunderbirds represent the United States Air Force, the Blue Angels represent the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, and the Red Arrows represent the Royal Air Force. Snowbirds appearances can be cancelled or modified because of weather, operational issues or safety requirements, so “traditionally” does not mean every ceremony includes a flyover.
