Which actress plays Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries?

Anne Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries.

The 2001 film was Hathaway’s feature-film debut. Mia is an awkward teenager living in San Francisco who discovers that she is heir to the throne of the fictional European kingdom of Genovia. Julie Andrews plays her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, who teaches Mia royal manners and prepares her for a public role.

Garry Marshall directed the film, which was adapted from Meg Cabot’s 2000 young-adult novel of the same name. The movie’s romance is secondary to its coming-of-age and family story, but it is commonly grouped with romantic comedies because of its light comic tone and teenage relationship plotlines. Hathaway returned as Mia in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, released in 2004. The sequel also stars Andrews and was again directed by Marshall.
