Which actress played White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg?

Allison Janney played White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg on The West Wing.

Janney appeared as C.J. from the series premiere in 1999 through the finale in 2006. The character serves as the principal public face of President Josiah Bartlet’s administration, handling press briefings, political messaging, and the often combative relationship between the White House and the news media.

C.J. begins the series as press secretary and later becomes White House chief of staff after Leo McGarry leaves the position. Her character is sometimes described as being partly inspired by Dee Dee Myers, the former Clinton administration press secretary, who also served as a consultant to the show.

The role became Janney’s breakthrough television performance. She won four Primetime Emmy Awards for playing C.J., and the character appears in all 154 episodes. Mary McCormack, Janel Moloney, and Stockard Channing were also prominent cast members, but they played different characters.
