Which actress portrayed Amy Gardner, the women's-rights advocate on The West Wing?

The story behind the answer

Mary-Louise Parker portrayed Amy Gardner, the women’s-rights advocate on The West Wing. Gardner was a politically experienced Democratic strategist whose forceful personality often challenged the Bartlet administration from inside its own coalition.

Amy became especially important in the third season, when First Lady Abbey Bartlet hired her as chief of staff. Gardner pushed issues involving women’s rights, reproductive freedom, and political organizing, and her policy goals sometimes clashed with the White House’s electoral calculations. Her relationship with Josh Lyman added a personal storyline to her policy conflicts.

Parker’s performance earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2002. The role is easy to mix up with Ainsley Hayes, another memorable female political character: Hayes was a Republican lawyer played by Emily Procter, while Gardner was a Democratic advocate played by Parker. Parker later became widely known for leading the series Weeds.
