Which actress played Kathy Selden in the 1952 film Singin' in the Rain?
Answer
Debbie Reynolds
Answer
Debbie Reynolds
Debbie Reynolds played Kathy Selden in the 1952 musical film Singin’ in the Rain.
Kathy is an aspiring stage actress who meets silent-film star Don Lockwood, played by Gene Kelly. She initially claims that film acting is inferior to live theater, but becomes involved when Hollywood begins converting to talking pictures. Her singing voice ultimately helps solve a major problem caused by Lina Lamont, whose harsh speaking voice threatens her career in sound films.
Singin’ in the Rain was directed and choreographed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen. Reynolds was only 19 when she made the film and had limited dance experience; she had trained primarily as a gymnast. The demanding production nevertheless established her as a major musical-film star.
Cyd Charisse, one of the wrong options, appears in the famous “Broadway Melody” ballet as a glamorous woman who briefly captivates Don. Ann Miller also appears in the film, while Jeanne Crain was not part of its principal cast. Reynolds later became known for films including Tammy and the Bachelor and The Unsinkable Molly Brown.
