Which actress played Deena Jones in the film Dreamgirls?

Beyoncé played Deena Jones in the 2006 film Dreamgirls.

Dreamgirls was directed by Bill Condon and adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name. Beyoncé’s character, Deena Jones, is a singer who becomes the lead vocalist of a commercially successful girl group modeled loosely on the Supremes and other Motown-era acts.

The film also stars Jennifer Hudson as Effie White, Jamie Foxx as Curtis Taylor Jr., Eddie Murphy as James “Thunder” Early, and Anika Noni Rose as Lorrell Robinson. The story follows the group’s rise, internal tensions, and the consequences of ambition and commercial control.

Beyoncé performed several songs for the soundtrack, including “Listen,” a song written specifically for the film adaptation. Dreamgirls was not Beyoncé’s film debut: she had previously appeared in Carmen: A Hip Hopera, released in 2001.
