Which actress played Abbey Bartlet?

Stockard Channing played Abbey Bartlet in The West Wing. Abbey is the wife of fictional President Josiah Bartlet and serves as the series' First Lady, while also maintaining her own career as a physician.

Channing joined the show as a recurring guest star during its first two seasons and became a regular cast member in 2001. Abbey's medical background is central to several storylines: she is an accomplished doctor, understands prescription drugs and medical ethics, and sometimes clashes with her husband when presidential decisions affect health or personal privacy.

The character is often confused with other prominent women in the Bartlet administration. Allison Janney played Press Secretary C.J. Cregg, Janel Moloney played assistant Donna Moss, and Lily Tomlin played presidential secretary Deborah Fiderer. Channing's performance earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 2002 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
