Which actor won an Oscar for her film debut in Funny Girl?

The story behind the answer

Barbra Streisand won an Oscar for her film debut in Funny Girl.

Released in 1968, Funny Girl is a biographical musical loosely based on the life and career of comedian and performer Fanny Brice. Streisand played Brice after originating the role on Broadway, bringing the character’s comic timing, singing, and dramatic intensity to the screen. Omar Sharif played Nicky Arnstein, Brice’s husband.

The film was directed by William Wyler and featured songs by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, including “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” It became the highest-grossing film in the United States in 1968 and received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.

Streisand’s Best Actress victory is especially memorable because she tied with Katharine Hepburn, who won for The Lion in Winter. It remains the only tie in the history of the Academy Award for Best Actress. Funny Girl was also selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2016.

The distractors are notable performers, but none played Fanny Brice in this film or won this Oscar for a Funny Girl debut.
