Which actor was originally hoped to play Jack Shephard?

The story behind the answer

Michael Keaton was originally hoped to play Jack Shephard in Lost.

Co-creator J. J. Abrams was interested in Keaton for the role, partly because he wanted to work with the actor. At that stage, however, Jack was not planned as the show’s long-term protagonist. The early concept called for him to die during the pilot, making the part closer to a high-profile guest appearance than a six-season commitment.

The producers later decided that Jack should live and become the leader of Oceanic Flight 815’s survivors. Keaton was not interested in taking a regular television series role under the revised circumstances, so the part went to Matthew Fox, who became one of the show’s defining performers.

The casting story is often simplified into “Keaton turned down Lost,” but the crucial context is the script change. Once Jack’s death was abandoned, the role became a continuing lead rather than a brief shock appearance.
