What kind of doctor was Juliet Burke before coming to the Island?

The story behind the answer

Before coming to the Island, Juliet Burke was a fertility doctor.

Juliet worked as a reproductive specialist and OB/GYN in Miami, Florida. Her expertise made her valuable to the Others because women who became pregnant on the Island began dying before they could give birth. Ben Linus and Richard Alpert recruited her to investigate the Island’s fertility problem and find a possible solution.

Her medical career was also connected to her sister Rachel. After Rachel’s reproductive system was damaged by chemotherapy, Juliet conducted unauthorized experiments in an attempt to restore her fertility. The research became a defining part of Juliet’s backstory and demonstrated both her scientific skill and her willingness to cross ethical boundaries for family.

Juliet is sometimes confused with Jack Shephard, who is a spinal surgeon, or with other medical characters on the show. She is not a psychiatrist or cardiologist. Her professional knowledge of conception, pregnancy, and reproductive medicine explains why the Others were interested in her and why she became central to Lost’s pregnancy storyline.
