Which actor voices Sulley in Monsters, Inc.?

John Goodman voices Sulley in Monsters, Inc. Goodman plays James P. “Sulley” Sullivan, the enormous blue-and-purple monster who works as one of the company’s top scarers.

Goodman was already a major film and television actor when Pixar cast him, known for Roseanne and collaborations with the Coen brothers. Bill Murray was considered for Sulley and even screen-tested, but Pixar director Pete Docter ultimately chose Goodman. Goodman described Sulley as being like a seasoned professional football lineman: powerful, experienced, and fully committed to his job.

A common mix-up is confusing Goodman’s role with Billy Crystal, who voices Mike Wazowski, Sulley’s one-eyed best friend and assistant. Steve Buscemi voices Randall Boggs, the film’s scheming antagonist, while John Ratzenberger voices the Yeti. Goodman returned as Sulley in Monsters University and later in the Disney+ series Monsters at Work, making him the character’s principal voice across the franchise.
