Which actor voices Luigi, the Italian tire-shop owner in Pixar’s Cars?

The story behind the answer

Tony Shalhoub voices Luigi, the Italian tire-shop owner in Pixar’s Cars.

Luigi is voiced by Tony Shalhoub and owns Luigi’s Casa Della Tires in Radiator Springs. He is a small yellow Fiat 500 who is intensely passionate about Ferrari, Italian design, and racing. His enthusiasm becomes especially visible when Lightning McQueen arrives and Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher appears near the end of the film.

Luigi’s design reflects the classic Fiat 500, a compact Italian car associated with postwar European motoring. His tire shop also provides one of the film’s visual jokes: the building resembles a large tire store even though Luigi himself is much smaller.

Tony Shalhoub was already known for extensive television, film, and stage work when he joined the voice cast. Luigi is sometimes confused with Guido, his blue forklift assistant, who communicates mostly through sound effects and says little dialogue.
