Which actor voiced Mater in Pixar’s Cars movie series?

The story behind the answer

Larry the Cable Guy voiced Mater in Pixar’s Cars movie series.

Mater is a rusty tow truck from Radiator Springs and Lightning McQueen’s closest friend. Larry the Cable Guy, the stage name of comedian Daniel Lawrence Whitney, supplies Mater’s Southern-accented voice and much of the character’s homespun comic personality.

Mater is introduced in Cars as enthusiastic, loyal, and proud of his unusual stories, including his claim that he once performed a backward driving maneuver called “towing.” He becomes more central in Cars 2, where his accidental involvement in an international spy adventure drives much of the plot.

Although Mater is often treated as comic relief, the films also use him to show McQueen’s emotional growth. Mater values friendship over status and remains supportive even when McQueen becomes a famous racing star. His design is based on an old tow truck, with a missing hood and mismatched parts emphasizing his weathered but friendly character.
