Which actor portrays Frasier Crane in both Cheers and Frasier?

Kelsey Grammer portrays Frasier Crane in both Cheers and Frasier. He first introduced the character on Cheers before carrying the role into the long-running spin-off and its later revival.

Frasier debuted in the third-season Cheers episode “Rebound,” initially as Diane Chambers’s psychiatrist and romantic partner. Grammer’s performance proved popular enough that a role intended to last only a few appearances became a permanent part of the series. Frasier remained connected to the Boston bar through the rest of Cheers.

After Cheers ended in 1993, Grammer moved the character to Frasier, where the psychiatrist returned to Seattle and became a radio host. John Mahoney played Frasier’s father, Martin, and David Hyde Pierce played his brother, Niles; neither portrayed Frasier. Ted Danson played Sam Malone on Cheers, another frequent source of confusion.
