John de Lancie
Which actor portrayed the character Q? John de Lancie portrayed Q.
Q is an extra-dimensional being from the Q Continuum, introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation’s 1987 premiere, “Encounter at Farpoint.” De Lancie’s performance made Q one of the franchise’s most recognizable recurring characters: powerful, theatrical, mischievous, and persistently interested in judging humanity.
Although Q appeared across several Star Trek series, de Lancie remained the character’s principal actor. He reprised the role in Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Lower Decks, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. His son, Keegan de Lancie, separately played Q’s son, Q Junior, in Voyager’s “Q2.”
A common mix-up is confusing Q with Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard, or with Brent Spiner, who played Data. Q’s apparent omnipotence is a fictional trait; John de Lancie is the actor who portrayed him.
